My jewelry world is surrounded by beautiful palm trees with large leaves that move slowly in the wind with the blue sky as background. Huge mango trees are full of fruit that are getting heavy. Many of the tree species I do not know. The banana plants are not very high but have large leaves… also moving in the wind.
I’m in Jacmel in the southeastern part of Haiti.
Jacmel is located on the Caribbean Sea. The sea is blue, clean and vibrant. Sometimes it’s very calm – like the water in a swimming pool. The beaches are wonderful.
I am a jewelry artist and craftsman educated in Sweden at HDK – School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. I am originally from Colombia. I moved to Sweden 21 years ago. Nowadays, I live in Haiti a part of the year. The other part I live in Sweden on the island of Gotland where my business and my shop is located.
I shift between development and underdevelopment, between wealth and poverty. The work with my jewelry take 100% of my time. Around it many things are going on, various meetings and interesting experiences. Through my business I am engaged in jewelery made by women in Colombia. Right now I am in Haiti to start a preparatory training in jewelry making. The goal is to give people tools to help themselves get out of poverty.
Haiti is a very unique country. Poverty, underdevelopment and the ancient cultural heritage in the form of Voodoo gives the country a sense of primitivism and magic. Everything is slower in Haiti and there are many things that are not working. One must have patience.
Welcome to this blog which will tell you about my work with the jewelery courses, my own work, new jewelry, etc … and about the life in Haiti – the country which has 1.5% of their trees left, 60% illiteracy and many people who are starving. Haiti is a beautiful place – full of resources. So why are the people of Haiti poor? In this blog about Haiti you will meet the food, the environment, the weather, the geography, the culture, the religion and many other interesting things.
